Abstract

The expressions “total work of art,” “total art” or “total experience” are often used by critics and historians of art without any precise definitions. This terminological lack of precision shows an immanent movement of total art. All total art projects suppose that “totality” (totalitas) must be distinguished from a “whole” (totum). Using Thomas Aquinas’s arguments in the Summa Theologica, this article proposes a typology of total art projects, according to whether they are based on a quantitative, essential, or intensive conception of totality. All these kinds of total art suppose that an infinite totality is present in art, different from the whole of the work of art. The theological foundation of such a conception of art explains the inherent mysticism of every total art project, albeit atheistic.
